Nobody said it would be easy, but Gwyneth and Chris have tried to keep their intriguing relationship private over the course of their decade together.
Yet, every time Gwyneth Paltrow, 41, and Chris Martin, 37, did pose in public, the pair appeared to be supportive of one another.
So it comes as a surprise that the Oscar-winning actress and Coldplay frontman have decided to separate after 10 years of marriage.
The news broke on Gwyneth's Goop lifestyle website on Tuesday with a message titled 'Conscious Uncoupling,' saying: 'It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate.'
The couple, who have two children together, added: 'We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate.
'We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been.
Last year, they moved from London to Los Angeles and were only recently pictured looking like a happy family as they took their children Apple, nine, and Moses, seven, out and about in the sunshine.
In January, the couple were seen giggling like teenagers as they sat next to each other at the 71st Annual Golden Globes, held at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
But the couple have had their share of highs and lows over the years.
Gwyneth and Chris met in 2002, the same year that the Country Strong star had lost her father Bruce Paltrow.
The Coldplay singer helped her overcome the death and even wrote the hit song Fix You about her loss.
By December 2003, the pair married and Gwyneth welcomed their first child, daughter Apple Blythe Alison Martin, in May 2004 in London.
Come 2006, they welcomed their second child, son Moses Bruce Anthony Martin.
Gwyneth tried for a third child but had no luck and previously admitted how she suffered a devastating miscarriage.
In an interview with People magazine last April, she revealed: 'It was awful. 'It happened really late, and I wasn't expecting it at all.
'For a long time I just couldn't understand that it had happened and why. I was like "But I can't not be pregnant. I'm already past the first trimester, and I have three car seats in my head."
'To this day I feel like I'm missing that kid. But it wasn't meant to be and you have to trust the universe.'
The star said the miscarriage made her grateful for the positive things in her life, especially her two children - eight-year-old Apple and Moses, seven.
'More than anything I just realised "Oh my God, I'm so lucky to have two healthy kids,"' she said.
However, though Gwyneth and Chris have missed more than their fair share of red carpet opportunities over the years, at the beginning of 2014 things had looked promising.
On 12 January, the pair made a starry appearance at the 71st Annual Golden Globes.
Although at points they appeared to be bored during the ceremony, they also smiled happily for photographers.
The day before they were also seen in high spirits as they attended the 3rd Annual Sean Penn & Friends Help Haiti Home Gala in Beverly Hills.
Meanwhile their last public appearance together was at the Hollywood Stands Up To Cancer Event with contributors American Cancer Society and Bristol Myers Squibb hosted by Jim Toth and Reese Witherspoon and the Entertainment Industry Foundation.
