Nigerian women top African wrestling



Nigerian women at the 2014 Senior African Wrestling Championships which ended in Tunisia on Sunday dominated the event as they topped the rankings table with 67 points ahead of hosts Tunisia, who had 61 points, and Cameroon, who had 53 points.
The eight women garnered the points after Blessing Oborodudu (63kg) and Aminat Adeniyi (60kg) won gold in their events, Folasade Adekoroye (53kg) and Bisola Makanjuola (55kg) won silver.
The bronze-winning efforts of Ifeoma Iheanacho (69kg) and Patience Opuene (58kg) also boosted the points.
Nigeria’s men were unable to dominate at the championships, falling behind hosts Tunisia and Egypt in their rankings table.

Nigeria’s Ebikewenimo Welson (57kg) and Soso Tamara (96kg) excelled in the men’s freestyle, winning gold medals in their categories, while Opukiri Agala (86kg) and Sinivie Boltic (125kg) won bronze medals. The combined results amassed 53 points which were below Tunisia’s 67 and Egypt’s 53. Algeria and Senegal were fourth and fifth with 50 and 38 points respectively.
In the aftermath, the Chairman of the Commonwealth Wrestling Community, Josip Mrkoci, commended the Nigerian women for their success at the event.
“We would like to congratulate the Nigerian Amateur Wrestling Federation women’s team on wining the team title at the 2014 African Continental Championships in Tunis, Tunisia on March 29 with two gold, two silver and two bronze medals. Nigerian women’s wrestling team were also 2013 Commonwealth wrestling team champions in Johannesburg, South Africa,” the letter to the Nigeria Wrestling Federation read.
